Mike Hughes
Navy

Mike Hughes enters his 8th year as the Head Coach of the Women's Crew.  During his tenure, the team has steadily increased speed and competitiveness in the Eastern Sprints League.  

Hughes came to Navy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 as the Varsity Men’s Lightweight Coach. While at Penn, his Lightweight Freshmen medaled twice at the Eastern Sprints. In his second year at Navy, he led the Lightweights to their first winning season in many years. In the fall of 1994 Hughes took over the Heavyweight Freshman team and in 1997 his Second Frosh won the Eastern Sprints.

Mike started out his rowing and coaching career at Holy Spirt High School in New Jersey.  He has coached at Stockton State College, University of Pennsylvania and numerous clubs including Vesper, Riverside and Bachelors.  In addition to his rowing and coaching, Mike has also managed 9 Elite and Junior National Teams.  In 1988 he was a Manager for the US Olympic Rowing Team.

Mike Hughes coordinates the Navy Performance Enhancement Program for the Naval Academy Athletic Association. In addition to working with Navy athletes, Mike also helps elite athletes and professionals achieve greater success in their fields. A student and teacher of performance enhancement for over twenty-five years, Mike has guided many to achieving their goals.

A 1972 graduate of Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Hughes has been coaching since 1975. He has managed numerous National Teams and the 1988 Olympic Team.


Mike Davenport
Washington College

Mike has been involved in the sport of rowing since 1975 and has been a collegiate coach since 1980. He now is the head rowing coach, assistant to the Athletic Director, and adjunct professor at Washington College, in Chestertown, MD.


For several years Mike worked with the U.S. National Team, as their Boatman. And in 1996 he was the Boatman for the  U.S. Olympic Rowing Team. Currently, his company, SportWork, is the leading educational consultancy for USRowing and their Coaching Education Program. He presents seminars around the country and currently is teaching a college course "Leadership in Sports."

Mike has written many books, several of which are about rowing. His most popular book is the tenth anniversary edition of the "Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging" which is the best selling rigging book ever written. His Web site  http://maxrigging.com and his monthly e-zine MaxRigging strive to supply the latest and greatest information about the rigging of rowing equipment. He is working on a new book about the vocation of coaching.

Mike currently lives in Maryland with his wife and two sons.
